The International Home and Housewares Show was held at McCormick Place in Chicago in March, 2009.

There were three halls filled with an extensive selection of everything you could possibly imagine for the kitchen and bath as well as a huge line of cleaning supplies.

I spent the week exploring the MASSIVE show and found some really really interesting items that are accessible by accident as well as by design.

A few reviews to watch for - Porshe Kitchen cnives (it's how they spell it) for adults and children, Drive Medical travel commode, Fasta Pasta microwave pasta cooker, humidifiers, air purifiers, beauty products and more.

One thing I have to mention about the show though, they claim the facility is ADA compliant - well, the last time I looked, that included construction standards. The facility is NOT ADA compliant as the description leads you to believe. The bridge between the buildings is far too steep and the threshholds on the floor to the bathrooms are certainly not compliant either.

The booths that had a step up - I could name them and shame them into the 21st century or I can just shake my head and post the photo.

The shuttle system was also inadequate - as only one wheelchair can fit per bus, which meant we had to split our group and wait half an hour to be reunited or take a taxi. We took taxis.

When people claim accessibility, I believe it is their responsibility to actually ensure it is. If it's inaccessible due to construction issues, they should indicate that, in the spirit of being decent since a lot of people NEED that information.

Do you lurch dangerously like me when you open the fridge door?

I have MS that affects my left arm and leg; I have often stumbled forward, just catching myself in time by grabbing on to a shelf. It can be quite spectacular if you lose your grip on the margarine tub and it falls to the floor, splitting open.

The mountain of fat on the floor and globs splattered on the cupboard doors are no problem if, like me, you have a hungry, ever-ready, golden lab to clean up for you (Thank you, Alice).

Sunlight, fresh air, birds chirping, lawn mowers.. A daily dose of sunlight helps your body metabolize Vitamin D and it‘s known to improve your mental state. Just being outside can be a great mood enhancer. Actually doing something outside is even better for you.

And it almost doesn’t matter WHAT you do outside because magically, the lack of an overhead structure and/or surrounding walls changes EVERYTHING. The rules are different when you’re outside.

Think about it. If you lay around on the couch in the living room, you're lazy. If you're laying around the yard in a hammock or lawn chair, you're lazing. One is oh so terrible, shameful even.. and the other is perfectly acceptable.

I am quite excellent with tools. It’s a known fact. I’m so excellent that I even have some of my own.. a hammer, water saw, Dremel (with router attachment and a wide selection of bits), safety glasses AND a box to put them all in. It’s a very official looking, tool holding shade of orange. I upgraded from my Joe Boxer smiley face toolbox when I got some pliers that didn’t fit any of the preformed slots.

I’ve installed interlocking stone and laminate flooring, and I cut and laid tile around my woodstove. In school I built things out of wood.

Now, since minor household repairs and an 8th grade shop class (in my mind) qualify me to do much larger, more ambitious projects, armed with my Home Depot Home Repair series of books and my official orange toolbox, a while back (like millions of other people) I got the brilliant idea in my head to renovate my tiny little condo.

By myself.
